WHY CHANGE FROM MIXED ACIDS?
The recently announced closure (Lubes ‘N’ Greases, February 2016) of the Victoria plant in Texas threatens the ongoing supply of Corfree M1, the mixed acid traditionally used for corrosion inhibition in metalworking fluid formulations.
In addition, costs associated with increasing global regulatory pressures are also having a negative effect on the supply of this and similar mixed acid products. The dusty nature of these solid products means that many lubricant blenders find they are difficult to handle and can be unpleasant to work with in a production workplace environment.
IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE TO CORFREE M1?
Corfree M1 and other mixed solid acid products need to be neutralised in order to solubilise them so that they can be used as a corrosion inhibitor in metalworking fluids. This generally means that they must always be used as the reaction product with at least one other raw material or intermediate and, this reaction is often carried out in situ during the manufacture of the metalworking fluid or concentrate.

These cost-effective liquid products are easy to handle and non-dusting in a metalworking fluid production environment and they can be used as an alternative to both the mixed acid products and the bases that are traditionally used to neutralise them. The ease and speed of mixing can also reduce turnaround cycle times and increase manufacturing throughput.
